We fix it fast

Emergency plumbing problems we handle every day

If water, sewage or a lack of water is putting your home or business at risk, it's an emergency. These are the calls our Ottawa plumbers answer most often.

Burst or leaking pipes

Water spraying from a wall, ceiling stains spreading or a puddle you can't explain. We locate the break, isolate it and repair it with copper, PEX or a temporary clamp until a permanent fix is possible.

Frozen pipes

No water from one tap or the whole house during a cold snap. We thaw lines safely — no torches near framing — and check for splits before the water is turned back on.

Sewer backups & flooded basements

Sewage rising through a floor drain is a health hazard. We clear the main line, camera-inspect for roots or collapse, and explain backwater valve protection.

Sump pump failure

A dead pump during a storm or spring thaw can flood a basement in hours. We replace pumps on the spot and can add battery backup or an alarm.

Leaking or failed water heater

A tank leaking from the bottom can't be repaired. We shut it down safely, limit the water damage and can usually install a replacement the same or next day.

Overflowing toilets & blocked drains

When the only toilet in the house is blocked or every drain is backing up, it's an emergency. We clear clogs and find out why they happened.

Before we arrive

6 steps to limit water damage right now

  1. 1Shut off the main water valve — usually in the basement where the water line enters, near the meter.
  2. 2Turn off the water heater (gas: set to 'pilot'; electric: switch off the breaker) if hot-water lines are involved.
  3. 3Switch off electricity to wet areas only if you can reach the panel safely from a dry spot.
  4. 4Open a cold tap on the lowest floor to drain pressure from the pipes.
  5. 5Move valuables, electronics and rugs away from the water, and take photos for insurance.
  6. 6Call our emergency line and tell us what you see — we'll guide you until the plumber arrives.

Night, weekend or holiday — same team, same standards

Our after-hours plumbers are the same licensed professionals who work our daytime calls. You get the same written price, the same workmanship guarantee and the same clean-up — just at 3 a.m. instead of 3 p.m.

Honest emergency pricing

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Ottawa?

An emergency plumbing visit in Ottawa is made up of two parts: a service-call (dispatch) fee that covers getting a licensed plumber and a stocked truck to you outside regular hours, and a flat-rate price for the repair itself. You hear the after-hours rate on the phone and approve the repair price in writing before any work begins.

What changes the price? The time of day, how hard the problem is to reach (behind finished drywall versus an open basement ceiling), the materials needed and whether a temporary repair is enough tonight with a permanent repair scheduled during business hours — often the most economical choice.

There are no hidden overtime multipliers and no charge for travel time once you've approved the price. If a problem can safely wait until morning, we'll tell you so you can save the after-hours premium.

  • After-hours rate quoted on the phone
  • Written flat-rate price before work starts
  • Option of a temporary fix tonight, permanent repair at daytime rates
  • No travel-time or overtime surprises
  • Photos and written cause report for your insurer
  • Workmanship guarantee on every repair

Across the whole city

Emergency plumbing in every Ottawa neighbourhood

We dispatch emergency plumbers from zones across the city so the nearest truck takes your call: central Ottawa (Centretown, the Glebe, Westboro, Vanier, Sandy Hill), the west end (Kanata, Stittsville, Bells Corners), the south (Nepean, Barrhaven, Riverside South, Manotick), and the east (Orléans, Gloucester, Cumberland).

Rural homes on wells and septic systems are covered too — and a no-water call at a rural property is treated as a priority. See the full list on our Ottawa service areas page.

Emergency plumbing in Ottawa

What every Ottawa homeowner should know before a plumbing emergency

Most emergencies we see were preventable or could have been far less damaging. Here is what our emergency plumbers have learned from years of late-night calls across the city.

01

Why Ottawa has so many burst pipes

Ottawa is one of the coldest national capitals in the world. Long stretches below −20 °C push frost deep into the ground and into poorly insulated exterior walls, garages and crawl spaces. Water expands about 9% as it freezes, and that pressure splits copper and plastic alike.

The break often isn't noticed until the pipe thaws — which is why so many burst-pipe calls come in on the first mild day after a deep freeze. Keeping the house above 15 °C, opening cabinet doors on outside walls and dripping a tap on the coldest nights are the cheapest insurance you can buy.

02

Spring thaw and storm flooding

When snow melts quickly or a summer storm drops several centimetres of rain in an hour, Ottawa's combined and storm sewers can surcharge. Water then looks for the lowest exit — often your basement floor drain.

A properly installed backwater valve and a working sump pump are the two biggest defences. The City of Ottawa offers a Residential Protective Plumbing Program that may subsidise part of the cost for eligible homes; details are on the City of Ottawa website.

03

Know your main shut-off valve

The single most valuable thing you can do is find your main shut-off now, while nothing is wrong. In most Ottawa homes it sits on the incoming water line beside the meter in the basement or utility room. Older gate valves seize after years of disuse; if yours won't turn, we can replace it with a quarter-turn ball valve in under an hour.

Condo owners should also know where their in-suite shut-offs are, as building management may take time to respond at night.

04

What happens when you call us

A dispatcher answers, asks a few quick questions and walks you through stopping the water. We then send the nearest qualified plumber and give you an honest arrival estimate.

On arrival the plumber protects your floors, finds the cause and gives you a written flat-rate price before starting. You approve the price, we fix it, test it and explain how to avoid a repeat. Photos and a written summary are available for your insurer.

05

Emergency vs. next-day service

Not every problem needs a 2 a.m. visit. A slow drip under a sink can wait for a daytime appointment at regular rates — just place a bucket and close the fixture's shut-off. Active leaks, sewage, no water, a failed sump pump during rain or a leaking water heater should not wait.

If you're unsure, call. We'll tell you honestly whether it can wait until morning, and we never pressure anyone into an after-hours visit they don't need.

06

Insurance and documentation

Most Ontario home insurance policies cover sudden and accidental water damage, but not gradual leaks or, without a specific endorsement, sewer backup. Take photos before cleanup, keep damaged items until your adjuster sees them, and keep our invoice describing the cause.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada publishes practical guidance on water damage and sewer backup coverage that is worth reading before you ever need it.

07

Gas smells are different

If you smell rotten eggs near a water heater, furnace or other gas appliance, do not use switches or phones inside. Leave the building and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside. Once the utility has made the area safe, our certified technicians can repair or replace the appliance.

08

Preventing the next emergency

After the immediate problem is fixed, we'll point out other risks we noticed — an aging water heater, a corroded supply line on a washing machine, a missing expansion tank or a sump pump with no backup. Inexpensive upgrades such as braided-steel washer hoses, leak sensors and automatic shut-off valves prevent many of the emergencies we see every winter.
