Plumbing emergency?
Don't wait for an email reply. If water is leaking, a drain is backing up or you have no water, call our emergency line now. Here's what to do in the meantime:
- 1. Shut off the water. Your main valve is usually in the basement where the water line enters the house.
- 2. Protect yourself. Stay clear of electrical outlets and appliances near standing water.
- 3. Isolate the water heater. If it's leaking, turn the gas valve to pilot or switch off the breaker.
- 4. Limit damage. Move valuables, use towels and a wet-vac, and take photos for insurance.
Before you call
Helpful details to have ready
The more we know, the faster we can help. You don't need to be a plumbing expert — just share what you see, hear and smell. These details help our Ottawa plumbers arrive with the right parts and tools:
- Where the problem is (kitchen, main bathroom, basement, outside).
- When it started and whether it's getting worse.
- The approximate age of your home and water heater.
- Whether more than one fixture is affected — a sign of a main line issue.
- Any recent work, renovations or weather events such as a deep freeze or heavy rain.
- Parking or access instructions for condos and townhomes.

Plumbing help guide
Is it an emergency, or can it wait?
Not every plumbing problem needs a plumber in the middle of the night. Use this guide to decide how urgently you need help — and what you can safely do in the meantime.
Call immediately
Some situations can cause serious damage or health risks within minutes or hours. Call our emergency line right away if you have a burst or actively leaking pipe, water coming through a ceiling or light fixture, sewage backing up into a floor drain, tub or toilet, a water heater leaking from the tank, no water to the entire home, or a smell of gas near a gas water heater (leave the home first and call your gas utility from outside).
In each of these cases, shut off the water or power where it's safe to do so, then call. Our team will talk you through any steps you can take while your plumber is on the way.
Book within a day or two
Other problems are inconvenient but won't cause major damage overnight. A single slow or clogged drain, a toilet that runs constantly, a dripping faucet, low hot water, or a minor leak under a sink that you can contain with a bucket are all good candidates for a next-day or scheduled appointment.
Use the form above to book. Include a photo if you can — it helps us bring the right parts.
Plan ahead
Upgrades and improvements are best scheduled at a time that suits you. Water heater replacement before it fails, fixture upgrades, water softener installation, backwater valve installation, repiping and renovation plumbing all benefit from planning. We'll provide a detailed quote and schedule the work around your calendar.
Finding your main shut-off valve
Every Ottawa homeowner should know where their main water shut-off is. In most homes it's in the basement on the front wall, near the water meter, where the water line enters from the street. It may be a round wheel handle or a lever. Turn a wheel handle clockwise to close it; turn a lever a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe.
If your valve is stiff, corroded or doesn't fully stop the water, ask us to replace it on your next visit. A reliable shut-off valve is one of the most valuable plumbing upgrades you can make.
Understanding your water bill
A sudden jump in your water bill is often the first sign of a hidden leak. To check, turn off every tap and water-using appliance and look at your water meter. If the dial is still moving, water is escaping somewhere. Running toilets are the most common culprit and can waste thousands of litres a month. If you can't find the source, our leak detection service will.
Insurance and documentation
If water damage has occurred, take photos and video before cleaning up, and keep damaged items until your insurer has seen them. We provide detailed invoices describing the cause of the problem and the repair, which many insurers request when processing a claim. Ask us if you need additional documentation.
Booking for a rental property
Landlords and tenants both contact us regularly. If you're a tenant, let us know the owner's or property manager's contact details so we can confirm authorization and billing before the visit. If you're a landlord, we can coordinate access directly with your tenants and send you photos and a detailed report once the work is complete.
Getting a quote for a bigger project
For larger work such as a basement bathroom, repiping or a backwater valve, we usually start with a site visit. Your plumber measures, looks at access and existing pipe, and discusses your goals. You then receive a written proposal outlining the scope, materials, permit requirements, timeline and price, so you can compare with confidence and plan your budget.
There is no pressure to decide on the spot. Take the time you need, ask as many questions as you like, and book when you're ready.
Accessibility and special requests
If anyone in your household has mobility needs, allergies, pets that need to be kept separate, or a preference for a particular appointment time, tell us when you book. We're happy to adapt, and we can also recommend fixtures such as comfort-height toilets, grab-bar-ready shower valves and lever faucets that make bathrooms easier to use for everyone.
Our communication promise
When you contact Plumber Ottawa, you'll always know where things stand. We confirm your appointment, let you know when your plumber is on the way, explain what we find and send an itemized invoice when the job is done. If plans change on our side, we'll tell you right away. Clear communication is part of the service, not an extra.
